Breaks:- Tracks 2-8 provide around 50 programmed loops at 165 and 170 BPM, and there are a bunch of real stormers in here. The loops are sharp, punchy, tight, hard and perfect for the genre. Exceptionally well recorded these powerful loops will punch through a mix. Some loops are a little sparse, others feature some fill effects, the kick and snare drums throughout are excellent and often sound extremely powerful. Highlights for me are track 3 index 4 & 6, but there is hardly a weak link in this collection.
Don't be surprised if the the next CD you listen to sounds rather tame by comparison.
Upright Bass - Tracks 9-15 feature live and recycled playing of an upright (double) bass and contain 33 basslines all at 165 BPM, although they sound far more laid back than that. The sounds sound live and compared to some synth basses come over as very articulate and well, sound like a guy standing there playing a double bass. If this is the bass line you are trying to achieve then you'll find something you can use here. The sounds again come over as being very well recorded, though as they are live you do get ambient noise, which to my mind adds to the effect.
I could see other types of music making use of these bass lines, you can almost imagine a jazz beat over this and picture the smoky bar...
Assorted Bass - 2 tracks of 28 bass samples, from subsonic drone basses to regular synth blurps. Track 17 index 14 is my pick, is more of a lead line, incredibly powerful synth line that I had great fun wasting 10 minutes banging out power chords. A couple of the sounds here have audible clicks which should really have been cleaned out.
A useful collection of bass sounds here, just right for the deep underpinning of a track, others too will find use for these.
Atmospheres - 13 tracks of long, evolving, ethereal, droning soundscapes is the best way to describe these. Just a single sample to a track, which last up to 40 seconds, so if your short on RAM you'll be looking to just extract part of these. The producers suggest that these be used for intro's (or outtro's), though I could see these being used a distant background to a whole track.
Tracks 21, a building almost choral sounding atmosphere, and 25 a dark droning pulse with effects are truly excellent and the rest aren't bad. These textures could be used in many sorts of areas, ambient, space, sci-fi, almost seems a shame that many of these sorts of musicians might not look twice at this sort of CD and miss these. I'd certainly be extremely interested if N-Jay gave up Drum and Bass and produce an ambient/synth sample CD.
