160db - The Drum & Bass
Interface Page 3/4
Drums
- Just a single track of 18 samples, cymbals, snares and kicks, if you
want to make up loops or suppliment the existing ones from single hits.
Misc FX
- Again just a single track of 11 short synth riffs and sounds, that you
could easily drop into a track to create some interest away from the main
loop structure.
Gated FX
- Tracks 33-39 comprise 40 or so gated bass and synth lines, heavily gated
at 165 BPM. Each line is quite short but usually modulates quite substantially,
creating a variety of interesting effects. Some
of the loops are rather 303 like, others are heavily distorted, echo or
screech along. There is quite some variety here for producing those stuttering
riffs.
Musical FX
- In this section we have 6 tracks of synth sounds, pianos, chords, strings,
pads, sweeps and Rhodes sounds. Most of the sounds
are fairly gentle, by which I
mean their not huge "track dominating" sounds, just meant to
sit in the mix. Many of the sounds are very rich, slightly evolving sounds,
which could be used in many types of music. The only downside is that
there are half a dozen or so of the samples that have a real noise problem,
not a fault of the recording process, but the original instruments themselves,
otherwise an excellent selection of sounds.
Live Drums
- Tracks 46-54 give 9 tracks of live drumming, all at 165 BPM. According
to the inlay many of the loops have been Recycled, and in a couple of
cases you can see how an original loop has been cut up and rearranged
to produce a variation. The basic loops sound nice and open, generally
just featuring kick, snare and hi-hat. Some of the tracks have fill effects,
usually some kind of distorted percussion effect or synth sound. Compared
to the earlier breaks section these are rather lighter in effect, though
still tight and punchy, it depends on the effect your trying to achieve,
and its good that you get the choice. Once again there are some excellent
loops here, very usable.
Rhodes
- Seven tracks of a Fender Rhodes being put through its paces, allegedly
at around 165 BPM, but I'm not quite sure how exactly a 3 note tinkle
has a BPM, not to worry. What you get here are lots of little short riffs,
chords, patterns and the odd strange effect that they've managed to coax
out of the Rhodes. A good selection is provided for you to drop into a
track as an underpin, hook or lead depending on your taste.
Sax
- 5 tracks of short riffs and fills that are impossible to get anything
close to with the Sax patch on your synthesiser, short of a Yamaha VL1.
Most have quite a jazzy feel, and could be used in any type of music that
wanted to make use of this instrument. Again if your looking to add this
sound to your track just take your pick and drop it in.
I suppose in the ideal world I'd have like
to have seen a couple of sets of multisamples of the Sax to sample if
I wasn't too keen on the provided lines. You do get quite a selection
though and you could always cut up what is there should you want to.
Analog Synth FX
- The last section is 4 tracks of weird synth, burblings, sweeps, screeches,
chirps, sonar, drones, laser effects and so on. A nice little section
for adding something synthetic into you Drum and Bass track, although
these sounds are totally genre less and could be used by anyone who wanted
something just a little off beat and not quite musical.
The CD rounds off with a maximum level test
tone.
