260db - The Drum & Bass Interface Page 2/3
The CD is broken down into 12 sections - Breaks, Upright Bass, Assorted Bass, Atmospheres, Drums, Misc FX, Gated FX, Musical FX, Live Drums, Rhodes, Sax and Analog Synth FX. Quite a lot of the CD is in mono - the 7 section in italics above, the rest are in stereo or are a mix of mono & stereo Breaks - Tracks 2-8 - After the demo track the CD goes into the programmed drum breaks, about 50 or so, mostly at 170 BPM with a dozen or so at 165 BPM. Nice powerful beats, some spartan, some busy, mostly fairly basic in construction with very little in the way of fill effects, just the odd effect here and there. Some of the loops are presented with a variation or two, but in the main one off loops. These are pretty good loops, tight, powerful sounds, quite a nice variety within the fairly tight target, very well programmed and would make excellent underpins for a track. I'd have to say that I prefer the ones on 160dB but these don't disappoint. Upright Bass - Tracks 9-15 - Live and recycled loops from a double (or upright) bass all at 165 BPM, though they don't sound anywhere near that quick in reality, sounding much more laid-back. Do like these sounds, just like someone standing behind you playing a double bass, you get all the little "ambient" sounds too, the scrapes and bow sounds as you would in real life. A little different from your typical bass sound and certainly could be used by people outside the drum & bass area. Very good. Assorted Bass - Tracks 16-17 - Just a couple of tracks of synth bass sounds, some nice power bass sounds together with some deep drones and blurps. Atmospheres - Tracks 18-30 - Single sample to a track of around 25-40 seconds, of long evolving synthetic textures, perhaps more upfront and less ethereal than the first volume's collection, there is still plenty of movement and interest though the samples duration. Once again an excellent collection of atmospheres that could be used by anyone. I still think N-Jay should have a go at producing an ambient/space type sample CD, whilst I'd still prefer the sounds on the first CD these are still excellent. Drums - Track 31 - Just a single track of assorted single percussive hits, nothing too exciting. Misc FX - Track 32 - Bits of sound that don't fit in anywhere else that might be just what your track needs for the odd spot effect. Gated FX - Tracks 33-39 - As the name suggests there are some heavy gate effects in use here, together with a whole range of modulation and distortion effects. Probably the weakest part of the collection, perhaps over processed and lacking in inspiration, couldn't find any of the "killer hooks" the inlay card said. Perhaps the one section of the collection where the original volume is head and shoulders above the sequel. Musical FX - Tracks 40-45 - A whole host of spot sounds here, from shimmery synth lines, to shearing lead lines, sweeps, Rhodes sounds and effects. Very nice collection to add some interesting effects to a track, most are fairly mild in sound, just right to add a counterpoint or variety to a loop sequence. Live Drums - Tracks 46-54 - All the loops are at 165 BPM, many of which have been recycled. The loops sound rather lighter in effect than the earlier collection programmed section, and likewise are fairly simple in construction with just the odd fill effect. Several of the loops feature some pretty heavy distortion, which perhaps is overkill as many of the more straightforward loops are much more effective. Nice and tight and punchy, very usable. Rhodes - Tracks 55-61 - Lots of little chords, meanderings, riffs and effects, supposedly at 165 BPM, but not convinced ! Very nice classic Rhodes sound though the samples are a little uninspiring. Little doodles and riffs, sort of thing you might produce when playing with a new keyboard for example. Sax - Tracks 62-66 - Nice jazzy feel to these live sax riffs, again at 165 BPM, but aren't loops at all. Ideal for dropping a "live musician" feel into a track, the producers have kept the ambient sounds in, so you get breath sounds for example, some of which are very distinctive. Otherwise a nice little collection. Analog Synth FX - Tracks 67-70 - All sorts of odd synth sounds in here, deep rumblings, lasers, "engines", noise and so forth, might be the ideal spot effect you need...not as good as the specialist "off beat" collections, but not bad.
