Sample and Hold Page
3/4

Synth FX - 9 tracks - Here we have
more synth effects, related to the previous section except that the samples
are shorter, and there is little rhythm to the samples. Some are just
single "hits", I won't use the word "notes" !, as
many of the effects aren't exactly musical in the usual sense.
So what we have is a whole range of sounds,
from metallic clangs to radio interference, electronic heartbeats, sirens,
crashes and bangs, sweeps, wails, distortion, lasers, rises and falls
and synth like engines. All with the usual effects and processing that
characterises the CD.
All whole range of effects, probably be
ideal for say a science fiction soundtrack or computer game, space music
or for the odd spot effect in many genres of music.
Ambiences - 16 tracks - Longer samples
here of "ambiences", synthetic soundscapes, that evolve and
alter over their duration, mostly just of synth type sounds a few do contain
rhythmic elements as well. Most of the samples are fairly simple in structure,
if not in sound, mostly just consisting of one or two layers of sound
(I'd think), which make them more suitable for layering with other sounds.
To customise them somewhat more for your track. Whilst I've certainly
heard many more complex "ambiences" than these on offered, sometimes
with these more complex samples you do wonder "well what can I add
to that ?".
Many of the samples are of the "alien
world" variety, metallic, effected, shearing type sounds, deep synth
drones and burbling, many have slow attacks or slow repeating motifs.
Others may be compared to synthetic engine type sounds, heavily effected
pads or arpeggios, heavily distorted wind chimes, sub sonic basses, echo
filled whines, backward sounds, filter sweeps, dull chimes, and a few
somewhere in between. As the trademark of the CD there has been some serious
processing involved here. Echo, delay, reverb, distortion are much in
evidence, I doubt if you'd ever recognise the source sound of a sample
within this collection.
This section is quite what I expected, many
of the sounds are quite hard to fit into a category of "ambience"
per se, especially when compared to other peoples description of the word.
I really did like a lot of the samples in this section though, there are
a few ropey ones for sure, but if your looking for an unusual intro or
outro to a track, or looking for something different to add into a track
you may well find something here. Like the other synth section on the
CD they would ideally suit something like a science fiction soundtrack,
space music or game music/effects, some of the samples here reminded me
of 1950's B style space movie sound effects. But any synth sound lover
will find a ton of useful material in here.
Synth Notes - 9 tracks - The last
section of the CD rounds off with numerous individual sounds. If you can
imagine the scenario - mate comes around and see's a "piano"
and asks what it can do - these are the sorts of sounds to make him realise
that its not a piano.
There are some seriously powerful sounds
in here - searing pads and pulse type sounds - distorted sounds and drones
- synth hits and shimmers - cutting rises and falls. In many ways related
to the earlier sections, probably more cutting and would standout more
in a mix than the earlier samples, probably only the final track would
you say is your average "analogue collection" of sounds. There
is some meaty stuff in here, loved it !. You know sometimes you come across
a patch or sample, and you bang out a few notes or chords on the keyboard
and it sounds huge... (well I do !)... there are a number of those sorts
of samples here. If your looking for a serious lead line then you might
well find it here.
