Minimoog Classics
Page 3/3

Summary - Audio quality is excellent. There are some hints of noise on some of the sounds, particularly towards the top end of the scale, no doubt a "feature" of the Minimoog rather than any defect in the recording process. Two or three of the samples have a bit of a click in them, Track 19 Hollow Technologic Bass, the prime one, unsure if its the synth or a glitch, but either way would need editing out. As mentioned at the beginning the sounds have been recorded straight from the Minimoog so are very clean and clinical sounding, the Minimoog was around years before effects became standard on synths.

It's difficult to find anything bad to say about this collection from a production standpoint. The sounds are well programmed, excellently recorded and if your looking for the classic Minimoog sound then you need look no further than here. Whilst of course a sample CD would never replace having the actual machine its the next best thing, not to mention a lot less expensive and easier to integrate into a set up.

The multi-sampling allows the producers to provide a very accurate representation of the Minimoogs sounds, though in some cases this still does produce sounds that are rather a long way from their main usable range, either being too deep that make the sounds rather burbling or too shrill. Whilst this is accurate it does produce some samples that are probably unusable. It also cuts down on the number of unique sounds on the CD, whilst it would be difficult for the producers to cram anything else on the CD there are still under a 100 sounds.

On listening to a collection like this though it does make you realise how flexible and powerful today's synthesisers are. Whilst the collection I'm sure stretches the Minimoog to its limits there is a hint of sameness about many of the sounds. They are unmistakably analogue, warm, powerful or however you would wish to describe the trademark Moog sounds, there isn't anything surprising or fresh here. It's no fault of the producer, its just a nearly 30 year old synth, and we've all heard the sounds it can make.

However, it is a classic synth and the sounds do live up to the title of being Minimoog classic sounds, and if you want "that" sound, short of getting the original then the sound is here.

Overall - If you want the Minimoog sound, it's here - 8/10
