Korg Universe Volume 2
Page 2/3

770S Monophonic Synthesiser (20) - The sounds kick off with sounds from this small mono synth from the mid 70's, and for anyone who is a fan of simple classic analogue synth sounds will be right at home here. The duett modulator and parallel samples are all excellent, and vaguely familiar from perhaps Kraftwerk, early Depeche Mode or Human League tracks. With just a little effects these sounds, come much more to life, played on a Kurzweil 2000 with "Deep Space Flange" definitely a couple of sounds that will be appearing in my compositions - no higher praise can I give !

M-500SP Micro-preset Monophonic Preset Synthesiser (9) - Not a synth I'd ever heard of before and can understand why, thin, weak blip and tone like sounds. The synth sounds are OK, but otherwise compared to others in the collection rather uninteresting.

MS-20 Monophonic Synthesiser (25) - Classic little monosynth, much sought after and one of the first powerful and affordable machines, now much in demand and listening to these samples you can understand why. There is nice diversity on these samples which reflect the machine, many of the other early synths here have more a ring of "sameness" about some of the sounds. Sounds like Fat MS 16', Brite Mix 16' and Long Filtersweep are great analogue synth sounds, whilst some of the straight wave samples are a bit uninspiring by comparison to the others there are some great sounds here.

KP-30 Sigma Performing Synthesiser (18) - Rather bland sounding samples here, fairly innocuous tones in the main, though the "wave" effects on some of the patches add a bit of random like blips and movement to some of the sounds. Along with the M-500SP samples probably the least interesting samples within the collection.

Mono/Poly (19) - Nearly bought one of these once, probably should have, there are some brilliant samples here. 4 VCO's no less, big fat analogue sounds, 4 Osc Synth, Noisy Detuner, Poli Synthorchestra & Morphing Synth Repeat are all excellent sounds. Powerful thick analogue sounds, intermixed with classic warm "polysynth" pads, you've all heard them before and there are some great examples here. Possibly the best of the true analogues that Korg produced and these samples showcase it excellently

PE-2000 Polyphonic Ensemble "Orchestra" (3) - Just a few sounds from this now forgotten beast, Chorus, Brass & Strings all thick muted simple sweet pad like sounds, rather anonymous sounding.

ES-50 Lambda Polyphonic Ensemble (12) - There are some nice "Ensemble" samples here, the Chorus one sounding wonderfully distant slow string type sound. There are a couple of good soft electric piano's and a great Organ sound, though the Combi's, Clavinets and Piano's sound a little weak. A mixed bag overall.

PS-3200 Programmable Semimodular Polyphonic Synthesiser (12) - Rather forgotten about monster analogue from Korg, the sounds are quite powerful, yet still not very ear catching. Sounding a little anonymous, though still sounding classically analogue like. The only outstanding sound is the sample & hold synth PWM wave sample, semi random modulation that fades in and out.

Delta String Polyphonic Synthesiser (17) - Fairly similar sounding "string analogue" type effects mixed in with some synth to produce various mixes. Today of course these kinds of effects are taken for granted, 20 years ago was quite an outstanding feature, and doesn't stand the test of time too well. There are some nice resonance effects, but nothing that really one would consider outstanding.

Polysix Polyphonic Synthesiser (12) - A whole group of classic analogue sounds here, soft, rich warm pad sounds, a dozen variations, and with a touch of extra effects sound even better. You instantly notice with quality samples like these how much blander synths of just a few years prior sound. Excellent.

EX8000 Musitronics Expanded Programmable Polyphonic Synth Module (5) - Moving into the digital age now with this box, one of Korg's first synth modules, just a few nice samples here. The polypad with lead sample is my favourite, but all pretty good.

M1EX Music Workstation (26) - Classic digital workhorse synth, I own one, so I rate it ! The producers could easily have a filled the whole CD with patches from this synth alone (in fact I think there is an M1 sample CD somewhere). Pads, piano's, organs and string sounds, not to mention the all time classic "Universe" sound. A fine collection of sounds, even if nothing really very original here.

M3R AI Synthesis Module (7) - Smaller brother of the M1 and really the same applies, perhaps not quite the depth of sound but a fine little collection of sounds, love the Glassvoice sample, a kind of typical digital pad sound much maligned in recent times by the resurgence of all things analogue.

01/WFD Music Workstation (10) - The replacement for the M1 and sets the standard for digital workstations. Again we have an excellent collection of "classic" digital synth sounds, complex pads, powerful chords and rich string sounds. Another fine collection of sounds.

Z3 Guitar Synthesiser (9) - Guitar synths have never really caught on despite a few attempts by Korg, Roland and a few others. Here are a few sounds from the 1989 Korg guitar to Midi converter. Fairly ordinary sounding combinations of guitar and pad, percussive and lead synth type effects. Rather like some of the string synths from a decade earlier these sorts of effects are taken for granted today, whilst for a guitarist to be able to produce these types of sounds might be useful for your average samplist they're going to be of limited value.

KR-55 Korg Rhythm 55, KPR-77 Programmable Rhythm, PSS-50 Programmable Super Section, S3 Rhythm Workstation, M1, M3R & 01/WFD Drums & Percussion - The percussive elements of these beat boxes and drum kits from the workstations have been faithfully recorded here. As far as they go they are fine and could provide an interesting alternative from the 808/909 type sounds. Though none of these machines you'd have to say are legendary drum machines.

Korg FX Family (209) - The collection rounds out with a whole host of effects from the assorted synths that have been sampled here. So we get a whole lot of wind, surf, laser, helicopter, gunshot, reverse clap, spooky, bell and so forth type of effects. There are some nice ones here, though a lot you'd have to wonder how you would ever use them though.
