The CD is broken down into 5 main areas - loops, rhythm fx, distorted rhythms, events and soundscapes. Loops - Tracks 2-47 - Just over half of the CD is given to the loops, these range in BPM of 80-150, in steps of 10 BPM, there are 60 samples for each of BPM's 80, 90, 100 & 110 and 40 samples for each of 120, 130, 140 & 150, 400 in all. As throughout the collection there is just about nothing that would be a give-away if the samples were time stretched or pitch shifted so you could process almost any given loop to any BPM you needed to work with. Now I'm sure that most people, if they wanted to source some original industrial type loops from themselves could wander around their house, studio and place of work and come up with a collection of 15-20 odd sounds and try and create some loops out of them. But past there I think most people would be struggling a bit, here though we have a seemingly endless variety of clunks, thunks, shears, whirrs, machines, gurgles, distortion, clicks, hits, and then these have been moulded into hundreds of loops. It's a pretty impressive achievement. With many samples CD's I think well "I could do that", I may not have the talent, resources or equipment to do so, but I'd like to think that at least in theory I could. This is one of those CD where I think there is just no way I could have come up with that ! The loops in Titanium Rhythms 2 I would think have had a whole extra generation of processing that those in the earlier volume, many of the sounds in the first CD you could reasonably attribute to some sort of machine or process. In this volume however its reversed in that there are very few of the sounds that you could really tell what machines they were once sourced from, then once looped they even further lose their source. What then that leaves us with is a wonderfully diverse collection of clunky,clinky shearing, thumping loops that have little relation to reality. Certainly if I was near any machine making these noises I would be very concerned ! The loops range from quite simply ticky type loops, to complex dense soundscapes of noise, that may contain 3 or 4 elements constructing a complex rhythm and sound. Again in this context compared to the original Titanium Rhythms there is more complexity, more abstractness and more diversity. There is no targeting of the collection in any way towards any particular genre of music, simply because they just so totally abstract from what you might typically classify a sound as. Certainly some of these loops could be used in isolation, but perhaps the best use would be in conjunction with other more orthodox percussive elements, some loops just cry out for a big beat underpin to them. There isn't too much in the collection that you could call "light sounding", though mixed down in track they would certainly lose some of the upfront impact that many loops have. Despite the nature of the sounds there is quite a polished edge overall to the loops, as if the sharp edges have been rounded off with the processing. Nothing to put your teeth on edge. The processing that has taken place, though heavy in places, doesn't sound out of context or unnatural. They've lost the "ton of reverb" effect that some of the loops had on the first Titanium Rhythms, so that the loops in most cases could perhaps be imagined as coming from some fantastic other world machine. I can't help thinking of Depeche Mode a decade or so ago when listening to a few of the loops, which I guess is a compliment as they haven't done too bad !. On the other hand a lot of the loops are quite dense sounding, by that I mean that they fill the soundscape, and you'd have to be careful not to let them totally dominate a mix, unless that was the desired effect. One would also struggle to think of a use of some of the loops, more than once I thought, well how could that be used, but then again probably the same number of times I thought, "yes that would work with...." Overall I think this is a very good, very interesting, diverse collection of unusual, "industrial" sounding loops. Rhythm fx -Tracks 42-47 - These are really a continuance from the regular loops, except that the loops are at BPM 160-180 (though in most cases you'd never think they had a such a quick BPM), and sound a little simpler in structure. In particular these elements would probably work better over a more orthodox rhythm loop than many of the main loops where you might just want to add a percussive element or two. Additionally sonically the elements are even harder to source, one imagines that many of these are a single element of a machine process for example and then processed beyond recognition into something else, effected and then looped. Distorted rhythms - Tracks 48-58 - Here we have five samples in each BPM from 80-180 in steps of ten, 55 in all. In a way not dissimilar to the rhythm effects in that the loops are quite simple in structure, but here totally extreme processing and distortion has rendered the loops into "something weird land". If dense, distorted loops are your bag then you may find some elements here to spice them up. Certainly here you'll find some loops with some bite and edge, though for some I suspect it might just be a bit too extreme. Don't listen here with a headache ! Events - Tracks 59-74 - This is the individual sounds that have been extracted from the loops, broken down in to low, midrange, high and mixed hits. Really exactly the same comments apply as above, except of course here its easy to take just a single element from a loop (except that there is no way of knowing where the hits are for any given loop or if they are actually included or not...) Otherwise it's a good solid collection of weird percussive type sounds. Soundscapes - Tracks 75-82 - Very diverse collection of ambiences and effects here, ranging from machine shop floor type effects to almost musical type weird synth effects, rather better I felt than the original Titanium Rhythms "Toolscapes" but still I feel a long way behind some of the "Ambiences/soundscapes" that I've come across. An interesting if not inspiring collection of eclectic effects.
