Rhythmic Riffs & Phrases - 6
tracks of 40 samples, most with BPM's listed. Lots of synth rhythms, arpeggio's
and patterns that modulate and move, mostly through 4 bar loops. Some
could be likened to the Roland TB303, heavily effected. Others more regular
synth and synth bass like, though again at times heavily effected. Like
many of the sample on this CD they're generally full on sounds, not too
much is subtle here.
Effects - 2 tracks of synth weirdness,
blips, screeches, chords, scrapes and the like. Generally sounding pretty
awful, but I suspect that is deliberate !
Synths - just a single track of synth
sounds, couple of nice ones here, could have done with more as these are
a little away from the normal, quite discordant. One sample though is
rather lost in noise.
Gated Scratches - 4 tracks of 29
samples, rather akin to the gated FX sections, these samples are listed
with their BPM. I was expecting more scratchy sounds here judging by the
title, though I'd bet you'd be hard pressed to pick out a real "scratch"
sound on half the samples. Their none the worse for it mind, they might
just be not quite what you expect. These samples are a little more open
sounding than the Gated FX section, and again would form a good underpin
for a track.
Short-wave - 9 tracks of assorted
sound bites weighing in at just over 10 minutes of samples, static &
stabs from short-wave radio, often of a very lo-fi quality and noisy,
though that's the nature of the beast with these effects. There are some
quite nice examples here and a wide range, vocal extracts, music extracts
and noise though maybe one could accuse the producers of rather filling
up the CD with this effect. If you want to use this sort of sound then
you'll find something here very usable. If not then this section and the
demo track is over 20% of the CD used up.
Pads & Sweeps - The final section
has 7 tracks of assorted synth pad and sweep sounds. This is my favourite
section of the CD, lots of huge sounding pads, that swirl and modulate,
Jupiter sounding deep hits, power chords, burbles, choirs and the like.
These could fit into many genres of music, I like the "choir"
type sounds in particular, quite excellent.
The CD rounds off with a maximum level test
tone.
