On the Jazz Tip
Page 3/4
The toolbox part
of the collection gives a variety of isolated sounds either for you to
drop into a track or to make up into your own loop or rhythm.
Guitars -
This section starts off with 4 tracks of guitar sounds, two chord tracks,
and one each of progression and FX.
The chords mirror
the pitches of the earlier samples, making matching easier, so for A for
example we have A major, A minor, A7, A7#9, A7sus4 & Amin9. Each chord
is repeated twice, a short sound and then a more sustained version. The
progressions strum through 3 or 4 chords and finally the FX section gives
a dozen guitar sounds with echo, wah or bend applied.
The sounds like the
guitar sections within the Virtual Band section are all lightly played
and sound sweet sounding, unfortunately also like the earlier section
there is a fair degree of noise on a lot of these samples.
Rhodes - Set
up in a similar manner to the guitar section above except that there is
no FX section, the chords are the same and the progressions almost the
same. Again though Mr Noise raises its head here, I'd certainly be looking
to use some noise reduction here. That aside though you have here the
building blocks here to add the classic Rhodes piano sound to your track.
Flute - Here
we have 24 flute riffs played at C. Nicely recorded live you get the authentic
ambient noises that the instrument produces. These sounds aren't loops,
more drop ins to tracks, or for adding into loops. There are both soulful
riffs and rapid little staccato like riffs. Little bit different if your
looking for this type of sound.
Sax Squeals
- A dozen very short samples of Sax playing at its more extreme, that
wander off into high pitched squeals, though not to an unusable or unlistenable
level. Anyone familiar with the Gap advert on TV right now - I reckon
they've used the first sample in that.
Bass and Drum
Loops - A dozen loops of live drum playing with a bass part from 70-120
BPM, sounding very simple, open and relaxed. The drum sounds are mixed
down a little and the bass is slow and mixed high. To my ears these actually
sound more like "Jazz" loops that many of those contained in
the Virtual Band section. These being more well, Jazzy in feel, fortunately
the consistent BPM's that Sounds Good use makes it easy to try these in
the Virtual Band section if you want that more traditional type Jazz feel.
Top Loops
- Here we have 36 loops, varying from 70-120 BPM (about 6 at each tempo)
of more unusual percussion sounds, no kicks or snares, but a variety of
shakers, scrapers, tambourines, rattles, bottles, spoons, kitchen sink
?, you get the idea. The loops are very light sounding, and could be layered
with a heavier sounding loop or in isolation if you wanted a light percussive
feel. Reminds me very much of someone being let loose in a kitchen with
a pair of drumsticks to tap things or shake things. Different and very
usable in a mix.
Single Hits
- 12 Tracks of single hits, 3 of bass drums, 4 of snares and one each
of bongos,brushes,cymbals,hi-hats and toms. Most of the sounds are acoustic
though there are a few synthetic sounds in there. You get a good selection
here ready to make up into your own loops if the provided ones don't take
your fancy or your looking to be more original. Generally a little lighter
in feel and tone that many dance type offerings this collection would
make a useful addition to your drum sample library.
The final section
of the CD, Rebop and Triphop,is a bit off an oddball collection
of loops and effected horn sounds, not the best part of the CD by a measure,
if I didn't know better I'd call this the "we've 63 minutes of good
stuff, what can we use to make it up to 70 minutes" section. I'm
probably being a little harsh here, I'd have just rather seen this space
taken up with more of the main elements that the CD contains. Way better
than silence though !
Rebop Pads
- Not pads at all but loops, a dozen at 70 BPM and another dozen at 80-120
BPM, some of these almost sound like extracts from complete tracks, and
I struggle with some of them to wonder what you could add - except a vocal.
On most of them you get drums, bass and a melody. A few of the loops have
bad noise problems too, bit of a filler I think as I'm not really sure
these are very usable, unless you need a very short ready made track.
Tiptrip Loops
& Drums - 24 assorted loops from the usual 70-120 BPM. Sounding
a little out of place compared to much of the rest of the CD. The loops
contain all manner of effects, a few weird synthetic sounds and basses,
distortion, scratches and so forth. There are some quite decent loops
in here, most are fairly light on the percussion and somewhat more open
and usable than the Rebop pads
FX Horns -
The CD winds up with a dozen heavily effected Horn samples, with distortion
and echo and a few other effects thrown in for good measure no doubt.
The echo like ones sound very effective, there a couple of very suspect
distorted ones in between though.
There is no test
tone.
