Cuckooland vol.3 Asylum Page 4/4
Summary - Audio quality is excellent. There is virtually no noise and recording is sharp, except where deliberately introduced. The sounds have a lot of effects applied, which may not be to everyone's taste, though almost always this either has made the sounds or adds to them, in particular there isn't excessive reverb which might have been a temptation. The CD isn't aimed at any style of music making in particular, and unless your making straight classical music there will almost certainly be a lot of this CD that will appeal to people. There is very little straight musical content here in the normal context, and that there is effected out of shape. Distorted, off beat, weird, eclectic could all be used to describe the bulk of the sounds, though still maintain their usability, time and again I came across a sample and thought, yes I could use that. Unless your making "Art of Noise" type sampled tracks then you'll need more than this CD to make a track, but as a library CD it is excellent. It is evident that a lot of work and thought has gone into the both the original sourcing of the sounds for the collection and then in the subsequent processing and sonic manipulation that has taken place. This CD has received rave reviews from the music press and on listening to it, I can see why. The CD is full to the brim of top notch samples, there is a whole range within each of the sections, virtually no duplication or variation on a theme, with perhaps only the Marc-Layton Bennet section being a bit suspect. The CD will be most use to those musicians looking to add something different to their tracks, ambient, space, dance, trance, soundtrack, drum and bass, industrial and more will find a lot of usable material here, its hard really to find fault. Perhaps my only wish would be for a bit more bite in the drum loops but otherwise a very solid, usable sample CD that would make a fine addition to almost everyone's sample collection. Overall - Excellent collection of off beat loops and sounds - 9/10.
