Freak Beats Page 4/4
Summary - Audio quality is very good, some of the loops do have quite a heavy vinyl scratch effect, which I presume is deliberate rather than an artefact from their source. There are one or two loops with some hiss/noise, but again may be a deliberate effect rather than poor recording. I suspect the former as majority of loops are spotlessly produced. Whilst there is a lot of processing applied to the sounds, it's not as extreme as in some cases. There is no doubt that this is a very solid collection of loops, filling a niche that is often skimped over by other producers of sample CD's, namely the slower tempo dance market where these loops of BPM 70-105 will work best. There is a wide range of styles presented, and most anyone who is into making slower BPM styles of dance music with samplers or computers will find plenty here that they like and can use. The double CD presentation adds to the ease of use and value for money aspect of this very well put together collection. Whilst the CD isn't as radical or extreme (or "dark & brooding" to quote the promotional material) in its production of loops as some, its none the worse for that, the vast majority of the loops do strike me as being very usable and would work well in a mix. Especially where the loop isn't the dominant component of the track, I can imagine many working well under strong vocals for example. There are a few exceptions of course, though that's no doubt just personal preference. Perhaps the only vague downside is that I found few loops that really I thought "great", but instead lots of "yup ok", "nice", "could do this with that" or had my foot tapping along, partly I suspect as the loops are quite short. It would also have been nice to have slightly longer loops that had a little variation in them to actually make a track from them a little easier task, but as ever there is a direct trade off between length of time spent on any one loop and amount of loops on the CD. In many ways this is an ideal sample CD to add to most any collection, at least for musicians that don't specialise in a narrow band. Specialising as it does at the lower end of the BPM spectrum, lots and lots of usable loops will be a solid usable addition to anyone's sample collection. Overall - Solid, usable, slower tempo loops collection 8/10. Zero G products are distributed by Time & Space, click here to visit their web site. Time & Space, PO Box 4, Okehampton, Devon,
