Twisted City
Page 2/4

The CD starts off with a short demo track, a slow Rhodes chord theme with strings, loops and other effects dropping in and out. Not the best demo track I've ever heard I must confess, but no one buys sample CD's for the demo track.

Twisted Beats - 9 tracks - 83 loops - BPM's range from 64-140, the majority being in the 80-120 range. The loops sound like a straight live kit being played, then subsequently processed, often quite heavily, but without ever losing the identity as a live sounding kit. The beats are generally sharp, bright and punchy sounding.

The loops are presented typically in a four bar format, with no fills or transitions. Nine of the loops are presented with variations, 4 of these with 2 variations of the original.

The loops are almost all very "full" sounding, with little space in the soundscape. The basic percussion sounds are typically filled out with cymbals, gated, reversed and normal, rasps, scrapes, brush, shears, reverb, machinery sort of noise (though you wouldn't describe this as industrial), and big sounds. These drums sound like their getting some serious treatment ! Though the fill effects still sound part of the kit, not additional sounds to make the loops sound offbeat. Probably a kind of reversed gated reverb sound, or very effected brush sound is often evident.

Processing is heavy, EQ, compression and gating no doubt being used in abundance to produce the bright, punchy sounds, sure to cut through a mix, though one would have to be careful not to make a mix muddy after layering other sounds, as with the fill effects that are usually present do make many of the loops very full sounding.

If your familiar with the "Bristol" sound then you'd know what kind of thing to expect here, having quite a distinct flavour. Probably best described as a slowish hard sounding dance beat, played on a live kit, with effects. If your looking for powerful beats, away from your normal straight 4 on the floor dance style then you'll find a lot of usable material here.

Hard Step Drum & Bass Beats - 3 tracks - 24 loops - 2 loops have three variations and another two. These loops continue the theme from the Twisted Loops but at higher BPM's, 150-170, processed programmed beats, but sounding more open than the earlier loops as there is less of the fill effects present, more gating and less cymbals and reverb mostly.

Like the earlier loops these too are bright and punchy, and a solid collection of drum & bass loops.

Filter Rolls - 1 track - 5 samples - Metallic sounding filter sweeps without the 303 type squelch, pity that there is only a few....

Dual Processed Beats - 4 tracks - 38 loops - This is an interesting idea, each loop is presented twice, once in a "dry" format and again in a more heavily processed format, though the processing doesn't appear quite as extensive as the Twisted Beats section. Indeed overall the loops sound a little less effected and a bit more open. Though the processed versions of the beats still display the gated reverb shhhhhh type of fill noise.

As with the other loops on offer there is an excellent collection of loops, very well played with a great deal of originality. The loops with this section and the next too as well essentially use similar sounds put are put together to produce quite some variety without leaving the general theme of the collection.

Sweet Ludwig Kit - 2 tracks - 22 loops - Straight drum loops here, which do sound like straight loops, though there might be a hint of effects. Compared to the earlier sections these loops sound very light and open, certainly offering the user a different selection of loops if the "big" sound isn't required. Solid collection.

Tight Gretch Kit - 3 tracks - 33 loops - Carrying on from the previous section though with a different kit, these live loops again are open and quite light sounding, though making more use of cymbals and high-hats than the earlier set. Many of the loops here sound quite straight, without some of the intricacies of some of the earlier loops. Probably the weakest part of the loop set, but only in comparison to the others, these certainly aren't bad by any means.
