Individual Kit Sounds - 3
tracks - 55 samples - Straight clean recordings of a live kit, everything you'd
expect, kicks, snares, toms, hit hats and cymbals.
Double Bass Riffs - 4
tracks - 39 samples - Live recordings of a double bass, very short little riffs,
usually 4 or 6 notes, with a few single notes and as they are live there is some
ambient effects, though not in anyway distracting and if anything enhances the
live effect, so there are little scrapes and the like from the player. Quite
straightforward sounding, and very usable if your looking for this distinctive
sound.
Electric Bass Riffs - 3
tracks - 28 samples - Not dissimilar to the previous section though with a brighter
though still distinctive sound, perhaps slightly higher pitched that I'd go for
in an electric bass. Again there is little in the way of clever motifs here just
solid riffs and notes and very usable, and will fit into a mix with no problem.
Bass Effects - 2
tracks - 25 samples - There is one track of heavy bass effects, single notes,
fairly straight sounding and followed by another track of more synth sound bass
sounds, rather of the 50's B movie sci-fi effect.
Special FX - 1
track - 19 samples - More of the B Movie effects here, sci-fi effects, lasers,
sweeps, radars and the ilk.
Twisted Pads & Atmospheres -
2 tracks - 13 samples - Couple of gems mixed in with some so-so ambiences here,
quite short and sharp sounding for what normally goes for these types of effects.
Loved effects like "Frontier" and "Barron", but some of the
others were a little B movie sci-fi effect.
Leslie Guitar - 2
tracks - 18 samples - Very sweet sounding Leslie guitar chords and short riffs
half a dozen single notes, just a hint of noise on these tracks, which would
normally pass without comment except otherwise the CD's recording is nigh on
perfect and this is the only area where it's noticeable at all. Rather wished
there was more of the chord/riff sounds as the ones there are excellent, and
once again very usable.
Strings - 9
tracks - 66 samples - If you think the string sounds on your synth sound pretty
good then A/B them to this collection and you'll think again. A live sextet (2
cellos, 2 violins and 2 violas) string section recorded live, (so I'm told) though
the recordings are exceptionally clean. There are a variety of chords, tremolo
chords, progressions, sequences, duets, stabs, pizz effects (sort of plink sound
!) and slides.
The recordings have an excellent presence and
there is a nice variety in the sounds on offer, from shearing sustained string
sounds, to more rapid sequences or riffs of notes, and the benefit of having
numerous musicians is that the sound does sound very full with the complex nuances
in the sound that make the difference from this type of live recording from the
(now disappointing) string sounds found on your usual synthesiser.
Its a toss up if this or the twisted beats section
is the pick of the CD, but really is an excellent section, if your looking for
a live sounding string sound then you'll find an excellent source of material
here.
Rhodes Licks and Riffs - 6
tracks - 95 samples - Similar to bass and guitar riffs of earlier this time we
have Rhodes chords, notes and short sequences. Hint of noise on the samples as
you would expect from this instrument, it sounds as if the levels have been raised
as high as possible to reduce the noise floor. This has resulted in a bit of
a crunchy feel to the Rhodes sound, whilst retaining the characteristic Rhodes
sound it does give a distorted feel to much of this section.
As with the other section of this ilk in this
collection the samples are short and straightforward, solid playing with little
in the way of over complex patterns, which means they should slot into a mix
easily if this is the sound your looking for. Very good indeed if your looking
to add a Rhodes signature to your track.
Vinyl Scratches - 6
tracks - 94 samples - As you might expect from the title lots of short vinyl
extracts, with a lo-fi feel, scratches, short vocal snippets, rhythm snippets,
scratch rhythms, scratched chords. About a comprehensive a collection as your
going to want if this is an effect you want.
Processed Congas & Bongos -
4 tracks - 66 samples - Short effected loops with a BPM from 106-128, the processing
is reasonably light, as are the sounds themselves. There are a couple of examples
you'd be hard pressed to identify by sound alone, but in the main the loops still
retain the sound and feel of Congas and Bongos, but still manage sound a little
unusual.
Nice variety of effects, sounds and rhythms, ideal
for layering with other elements.
Single Hits - 1
track - 8 samples - The final track is 8 single conga hits
The CD rounds of with a test tone at digital maximum.
