Travelogue - Out of Africa 1

The samples on the CD are presented in 19 categories.
Where appropriate the samples are listed with their BPM, if the samples
are presented in the dual left and right format then the sample is indicated
as such with a "L/R" on the track listing.
Mixed Choir. A single sample, ideal
for an atmosphere or a lead in/out, wish that there were more like this
Drummers. Again
just a single sample (well two with the stereo split) of a simple drum
pattern.
Call/Response Singing with Drums.
7 tracks with 8 stereo split samples, with background chanting overlaid
with cowbells, xylophones conga's and drums. Nice selection of what you
would probably expect when you first picked up the CD of "African
Music". The voices sound similar, probably only because I've no idea
what the chants are !. The drum rhythms likewise sound generally similar.
Groovin Drummers.
18 tracks of 21 stereo split samples (so 42 in all) by the Ammasu Akapuma
Group (all the tracks are credited in fact). Just drum sounds within this
selection, with quite a range of sounds and patterns. Its not so easy
to see how some of these loops would be used within alternative genres
of music, the individual sounds could certainly be sampled for an authentic
set of African percussion samples. Some imagination is certainly required,
this certainly isn't a bad thing, anything with originality is to be applauded.
Dense Drums. 7
tracks with 9 stereo split samples with heavier drumming and patterns.
These samples could be a backdrop to a track or part of track, in a way
easier to place than the previous section as the samples here virtually
make up a whole soundscapes by themselves, whereas "groovin drummers"
requires a little fleshing out I feel.
Drumming with Call/Response. 3
long samples, of about 45 seconds each of drumming with chanting over
the top. Nice atmospheric feel here to these tracks, although some selection
may need to be exercised to extract a portion to include within a track
your creating.
Horns with Distant Drumming.
A single track of 5 samples, almost the only relief on the CD from percussion
and voices. The distant drumming in a couple of cases is really distant
- I can see it being taken out with noise reduction software. A single
horn sound, quite harsh sounding
Singing and Drumming
Children. Single
70 second sample, back to using the stereo split method, some selection
may be required by the samplist (unless they have a ton of RAM), to extract
part of the track to actually use.
