Travelogue - Out of Africa 1 Page 4 file:///C%7C/Web%20Sites/%7Bshort%20description%20of%20image%7D

Summary. Sonic quality throughout is good, some of the tracks have a little noise that you might need to filter out. On many tracks there is some ambient noise, though no fault of the recording process, it was just present when the recording was made. In some cases this adds to the sample, in others its a bit distracting. In some cases you may be able to filter it out if you wish, in other cases it may make the sample unusable if you can't life with it. Call it character !

I didn't like the stereo split idea, it makes the CD harder work, though the counter argument is that you get more for your money without the project going onto a second CD. If your only CD player for example is a portable without a balance control or if your balance control allows leakage your going to be in a bit of trouble here.

I'm not too sure the balance of the CD is right either, I would like to have seen more separate samples, just singing, chanting, drumming, atmospheres. Many of the tracks have singing and drumming overlaid, others have long samples, up to about 70 seconds in length, which to my mind is getting away from what a sample CD is supposed to be about. Part of what I am paying for is for the producer to have broken out and broken up sounds for me to sample, otherwise I might just as well get a regular CD (with clearance of course !) and sample from that.

Finding a use for some of these samples within your particular genre of music may be a challenge, many of the vocal samples are very usable, as are some of the more atmospheric drumming and call/response samples. Some imagination is required for sure.

This is a specialist CD, if your looking for African sounds, chanting, drumming or xylophones then this is ideal, it's different and original. But if your into mainstream dance music it may be something of a luxury purchase, nice to have as a resource of original sounds you might like to dip into from time to time, but wouldn't be a workhorse source.

Score. Its different and original, think about how you might use it first though - 6/10.
