Zip O Drums Page 2/4 ../../%7Bshort%20description%20of%20image%7D

The text file of information gives a breakdown of the categories, with a brief description of the contents, and that's it. Ideally I would have liked to have seen a listing of all the samples, with a short description. The main reason for this is that the samples on the disk are in the DOS 8:3 format, which is good as many devices can only read this format properly. Hence some of the names are therefore somewhat cryptic, 808drp4 and so forth.

Although to be fair, the vast majority you can figure out real easily, ch=closed hat, cbl=cymbal and so on. It's a pain of a job to identify all of the sounds, but lets say your looking for a snare sound, one of the directories has 138 files, you can eliminate the rim hits quickly perhaps, but that leaves you auditioning the rest, say 75 samples, when maybe with a two word description you could have cut the audition process down to 5 samples.

The disk is broken down into 20 folders, some of which themselves contain up to 17 subfolders. The samples are nicely organised using this structure, though as there are over 1100 samples here some of the folders do still contain 30-40 samples, the highest is 138. Overall though the samples are very well laid out. The advantage of the Zip disk method of course is that if you want to rename, reorder or reorganise the samples yourself you can.

Lets look at the samples folder by folder.

Chiefs drums - 37 samples - 5 excellent cymbal samples, 8 hi-hats, and 24 tight, deadish sounding kick drums. All acoustic samples.

Chris drums - 14 samples - 4 wooden sounding tight snares, 3 kicks, 2 nice snares with quiet ghost effects, a flam, a few grooves, nearly loops and a fill. Which are a bit at odds with the rest of the collection made up of single hits.

Djembe - 36 samples - 35 hits of this African drum, plus a 2.5 Mb riff of them being played. Very nice sounding and just a little bit different from your normal drum sound that you might like to introduce into a track

Dogwood drums - 221 samples - Big collection of acoustic sounds recorded at Dogwood Studios, hence the name. We have here 15 cymbals, 44 (stereo) hi hats, 138 (stereo) snares & 14 (stereo) toms. Many of the hits are similar yet still cover a wide range. If your looking to breathe an acoustic sound into your loops then you can do far worse than this collection. With so many variations its easier to bring in subtle variations into loops, make them more human than machine like. For example, every fourth snare sound drop in a rim hit, use 4 snare sounds rather than a single sound and so on.

Hip hop drums 2 - 70 samples - 28 hi-hats, 12 kicks, 29 snares & a bell sound. More "typical" drum sounds here that you'd find in a typical dance collection. hhkok11 has an artefact at the end of the sample causing a click, only mention it as its the only example of less than perfect recording or editing.

J claps & snaps - 17 samples - 14 hand clap variations & 3 finger click samples. All the "J" collections comprise of both acoustic and electronic samples from the collection of J2 (Jeff Weinberger).
